Amanda

Mrs. Fletcher

Amanda is Eve Fletcher’s colleague at the Senior Center and the person whose professional initiative helps reshape its lecture series. Her connection with Eve develops through an uneasy overlap of workplace authority and personal attraction: Amanda is flattered by Eve’s advance, but does not want to pursue a relationship with her boss. Their shared work later gives them a way to recover from the awkwardness without turning the kiss into a romance.

Identity and Work

Amanda’s professional relationship with Eve is explicitly hierarchical: Eve is her boss. Outside work, however, Amanda has repeatedly invited Eve to join her, and their eventual Friday-night drink follows Eve’s belated acceptance of those invitations. Eve regards it as a casual outing between colleagues, not a date, but Amanda’s presence in her life already has a personal dimension beyond their work together.

Amanda also advocates for a more adventurous approach to the Senior Center’s lecture series. Her pitch for something edgy and outside the usual format prompts Eve to suggest inviting a transgender professor to speak. The idea becomes a public sign that the series is under new management, and it gives Amanda and Eve a shared project with stakes beyond their unresolved personal feelings.

The Drink and Eve’s Advance

Eve arrives at the drink insisting to herself that it is not a date. Yet she feels anticipatory excitement, chooses a silky green blouse, and unbuttons it lower than usual. She attributes this heightened awareness of sexual possibility to her recent pornography viewing. Amanda’s invitation is therefore part of a situation Eve has already begun to imagine erotically, even though Amanda has not framed their outing as a date.

The evening ends with Eve attempting to kiss Amanda outside the restaurant. Amanda flinches, leaving Eve with the impression that her advance has been unwelcome. In retrospect, Amanda thinks she could have refused more gently: she likes Eve, was flustered, and felt flattered by the kiss. Her private response is not a wish that she had kissed Eve back or gone to bed with her. She recognizes that becoming involved with her boss would be a bad idea, even as she later replays the moment and uses it as material for sexual fantasies.

Professional Collaboration and Aftermath

The lecture project helps Amanda and Eve move past the kiss’s immediate awkwardness. Amanda had felt guilty about her reaction, which she remembers as too much like treating Eve as an attacker rather than turning down a clumsy but not wholly unwelcome overture. Their shared anticipation around the new speaker brings them closer again, while leaving the boundary clear: Amanda’s warmth and attraction do not amount to a desire for a relationship with her supervisor.

Amanda’s professional proposal also exposes the risks of trying to change an established institution. The transgender guest speaker is part of the bold new direction she had encouraged, and Eve takes a significant share of the credit for pursuing it. Amanda’s role is thus not limited to the romantic tension: she helps initiate a change in the lecture series, even as the personal consequences of her relationship with Eve remain unresolved.
